The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) announced today that Vegas Golden Knights prospect Mathieu Cataford has won the Michel-Brière Trophy as the QMJHL’s Most Valuable Player.

Cataford tallied 40 goals and 50 assists for 90 points in 65 games for the Halifax Mooseheads. Cataford led all Mooseheads skaters in the assists and points department while trailing second in goals to Markus Vidicek. Cataford registered one goal and one assist in four QMHL Playoff contests. His 90 points ranked third leaguewide, trailing New York Islanders prospect Justin Gill and Antonin Verreault, all of whom were finalists.

Vegas drafted Cataford No. 77 overall in the 2023 NHL Draft and signed him to a three-year, entry-level contract on Dec 31.

Recent winners of the Michel-Brière Trophy include Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Jordan Dumais and New York Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere.

Following Cataford’s QMJHL season, he was assigned to the Golden Knights’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Henderson Silver Knights where he tallied two points in four games.
