Tomas Plekanec Signs a Six-Year Extension

Updated: June 22, 2010 at 10:34 pm by Alexander Monaghan
Fantasy Advice, Opinions

Cross another name off the free agent market as Tomas Plekanec will stay with the Habs for six more years. According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Plekanec signed a six-year extension at an annual rate of five million.

Although maddeningly inconsistent throughout his career, the playmaking pivot proved himself pivotal to the Montreal Canadiens.  His 70 points last season were one better than his career highs which he previously established in the middle of Alex Kovalev and Andrei Kostitsyn.

The main question is, will he play next season like 2009-2010 or 2008-2009– when he failed to show that same 40+ assist flair.  Over all four full seasons with the Habs the Czech native managed to score at least 20 goals so pencil him in for at least that.

With talented snipers like Michael Cammalleri on the roster, Plekanec should continue to at least put up 30 assists provided they both stay healthy.  At 27-years-old he remains an intriguing and option for points but not the safest.
