Early Buy-Low, Sell-High Candidates

Updated: January 30, 2013 at 12:58 pm by Brock Seguin
Fantasy Advice

In fantasy hockey there is nothing better than trading for a player when his value is low and then he starts to rip it up on your roster. It is so important in fantasy to get good value for you players, and there is no better time than at the start of the season to get good value on players that are under or overachieving. I’m going to give you a Forward, Defenceman and Goalie that you can buy low right now and then three that you can sell high.

BUY-LOW.

Forward – Alexander Ovechkin – LW – Washington Capitals

Ovechkin’s fantasy value is probably at it’s all-time low right now. 6 games into the season he has only 1 G, 1 A, -2 and 20 SOG. Now saying this no owner is going to just give Ovechkin away, but if you’re a fan of ‘Alexander the Great’ this is the best time to offer a trade for him. Ovechkin may not be what he once was but he is still an elite goal scorer and it’s only a matter of time before he starts putting the puck in the net.

Defenceman – Shea Weber – D – Nashville Predators

Early this season it looks like Weber and Ryan Suter both need each other, because they’re both off to bad starts. Weber has yet to register a point in the Predators first 6 games and is a -1. However he is still an elite D-man and will pick his play up eventually. Hs he is playing close to 27 minutes a game, so he’s going to get his chances. If you can get an owner to give up on Weber so early, you’re not going to regret it.

Goalie – Pekka Rinne – G – Nashville Predators

Right now there are 42 other goalies in the NHL with more wins than Rinne (which isn’t hard when he has 0) and his numbers aren’t good either. Rinne currently has a 2.67 GAA and an .899 SV%, but you can’t forget that he has been a Vezina finalist multiple times and it’s only been 5 games for him. I think you can get Rinne fairly easily with the right offer.

SELL-HIGH

Forward – Patrick Marleau – LW – San Jose Sharks

Don’t get me wrong here, I like Marleau and I think he is a great player but 9 G, 5 A, +5 and 9 PP points in only 6 games is out of this world. I’m sure there are owners out there that would give up a boat load for Marleau right now. I think Marleau and the Sharks are going to have a good season, but I don’t foresee him being able to keep up this pace. Do not give Marleau away for peanuts but get good value for this hot start.

Defenceman – Andrei Markov – D – Montreal Canadiens

Markov is a great offensive-defenceman and is on a tear right now, but lets be serious… This guy cannot stay healthy. He’s only played 65 NHL games since 2009. I would try to unload Markov now before that injury comes and he loses all his value. 4 G, 3 A and 3 GWG in 5 games from a D-man? Yeah I think that would attract some attention from other owners.

Goalie – Craig Anderson – G – Ottawa Senators

Anderson is 4-1 with a 0.98 GAA with a .967 SV% which is a fantastic start to the season. However he has been fairly inconsistent throughout his career so this hot start is bound to come to an end. If you have Anderson if you can trade him for a better goalie option and maybe more, now might be the time to do so.
