Tavares (undisclosed) is day-to-day and will not play on Tuesday.

Tavares has 28 goals, 34 assists, 226 SOG, 28 PIMs and a -1 plus/minus through 63 games played but will miss Tuesday's game due to an undisclosed injury. The 32-year-old Maple Leafs' captain is considered day-to-day until there is a further update on the injury.

John Tavares
Tavares is expected to play for the Maple Leafs in their season opener on Wednesday.

The Maple Leafs Captain will return to the lineup for the team's opening game Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens. The 13-year veteran returns to the team after an oblique injury caused him to miss time since leaving the Leafs' lineup in a preseason game on September 24th. Tavares enjoyed a decent 2021-22, collecting 27 goals and 76 assists in 79 games. Since joining the Maple Leafs in 2018-19, Tavares has 119 goals and 274 points in 280 games.

John Tavares
Tavares (oblique) returned to practice on Friday.

Tavares skated with the team for the first time since suffering an oblique strain on September 24th. Tavares' original timeline was three weeks, suggesting he could miss the first four games of the season. Returning to the ice on Monday, albeit in a non-contact jersey, suggests that he may be a little bit ahead of schedule.

John Tavares
Tavares will miss at least three weeks with an oblique strain.

Tavares is expected to miss at least the first four games of the regular season with an oblique strain he suffered in training camp. With Tavares sidelined, Alex Kerfoot will likely centre the Maple Leafs' second line, and Pontus Holmberg could open the season with the team.

John Tavares
Tavares (knee/concussion) skated briefly on Thursday; remains out indefinitely.

Tavares skated for about 20 minutes on Thursday morning but the Maple Leafs provided no real update on his status. While it is certainly encouraging that Tavares is already back on the ice, there is still no timetable for his return. Having their captain back in the building should at least provide the Maple Leafs with a morale boost heading into Game 5.

John Tavares
Tavares (knee/concussion) will miss at least two weeks.

Tavares will miss at least two weeks with the knee injury but the concussion is a little more uncertain. All in all, this is great news for Tavares who was stretchered off following a scary collision in Game 1. Look for Alex Galchenyuk to draw in and replace Tavares in Game 2.
