The Panthers have signed Shawn Thornton to a one-year contract extension.

Thornton has three points (1G / 2A), a minus-2 rating and 50 PIMS in 35 games while averaging 8:51 TOI this season. The veteran tough guy will return to the Panthers next year and continue to be a leader for a young Florida squad.

Thornton (lower-body) is expected to return to the Panthers lineup on Thursday.

Thornton has been out of the lineup since December 6th, but it sounds like he will be back in tomorrow vs. the Blue Jackets. He has one goal, one assist and 27 PIMS in 22 games with the Panthers.

Thornton (lower-body) has been placed on injured reserve.

Thornton will miss his fourth consecutive game tonight vs. the Capitals. Placing Thornton on IR enabled the Panthers to activate Aleksander Barkov and Scottie Upshall from IR without having to send anyone to the minors.

Thornton is eligible to return to the Bruins lineup on Saturday after serving his 15-game suspension.

Thornton will skate on the Bruins fourth line with Daniel Paille and Gregory Campbell on Saturday in San Jose. He is not a serviceable fantasy player.

The Bruins’ Shawn Thornton has decided to appeal his 15-game suspension for punching and injuring unsuspecting Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik.

As laid out in the collective bargaining agreement, the appeal first goes to Commissioner Gary Bettman. If Bettman upholds the suspension, Thornton and the NHLPA can then elect to appeal to a neutral arbitrator.

Thornton will have an in-person hearing for the sucker punch he landed on Brooks Orpik last night - he will not travel to Toronto for Sunday's game.

Thornton tugged Orpik down after a whistle and punched him when he was on his back. The surrounding Penguins players immediately called for the trainer as Orpik was clearly in distress. Thornton is likely looking at a lengthy suspension.
