Cole (spinal contusion) will miss the rest of the season and playoffs.

The Wings acquired, Cole, 36, at the trade deadline from Dallas, attracted by his 6-foot-2 size and hard-nosed play (since he won't meet the games-played threshold, the Wings get Dallas' third-round pick draft pick in return). Cole had three goals and three assists in 11 games before getting hurt March 24. Cole revealed Wednesday that he has a spinal cord contusion severe enough doctors have cautioned him not to play again this spring.

Cole will make his Detroit debut on a line with Justin Abdelkader and Henrik Zetterberg. Cole comes in having scored three goals and three assists in his last six games. He brings some physicality along with some scoring touch.

The Red Wings have traded Mattias Backman, Mattas Janmark and a 2015 2nd round pick to the Stars for Erik Cole and a conditional 3rd round pick.

The Red Wings were searching for a big body forward and they found that in pending unrestricted free agent Erik Cole. Cole has 18 goals and 15 assists (33 points) in 57 games with Dallas this season. The 36-year-old also led the Stars in hits with 116, so he brings a much needed physical brand of hockey to Detroit.

Cole left Tuesday’s game with an upper-body injury and did not return.

Cole played just 3:12 before retiring to the dressing room for the night. There is no immediate word on how serious the injury is, but he will have the All Star break to recover. Expect an update to come on Wednesday.

There’s also a minor shakeup in the forward lines with Erik Cole and Andrei Kostitsyn switching spots. Cole will play with Tomas Plekanec and Michael Cammalleri

Cole gets a bump back up to the first line. Last season he scored 26 goals and 52 points through 82 games while playing on the first two lines in Carolina. It remains to be seen whether he can adapt to a different system.

Cole starts the season on the third line which should be a slight hit in his fantasy hockey value. Last season he scored 26 goals and 52 points while playing almost exclusively on the first and second line. Expect him to drop back down to the 40-point range should he remain a third liner.
