The Flames have signed defenseman Ryan Wilson to a professional tryout.

Wilson, 28, started his professional career with the Flames’ organization back in 2008-09. He has spent the last six seasons with the Avalanche, but is back with the Flames organization on a pro tryout. Last year he was limited to three games because of injury. He has 67 career points (7G / 60A) in 230 games.

Wilson will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery Wednesday, and he has likely played his last game with the team.

Wilson, 27, is a pending unrestricted free agent who can't seem to remain healthy. He has played in just three of 19 games this season, 28 of 82 last season and 12 of 48 in the lockout-shorted campaign of 2013. Colorado has just six available defensemen, with Brad Stuart (hamstring) also out of action.

Wilson, who completed another full practice Sunday and was available to the media for the first time since suffering a back injury Nov. 6 against Nashville, is not expected to play Monday against the Dallas Stars. But Roy wants to play Wilson on Tuesday’s against the Stars in Dallas, assuming he has another good skate Monday morning. Wilson, 26, said he injured his back in a collision against the boards, and he hopes this latest setback is his last for a while.

Ryan Wilson returns to the Avalanche blueline tonight.

Wilson missed all of Colorado's preseason contests and first the first four games this season with a minor knee injury. Wilson has been skating for the last two weeks, but it wasn't until last Sunday's practice that he fully participated in drills with his teammates. Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy has been reluctant to change his lineup during the winning streak, but he will make one change against the Capitals as Wilson will replace Tyson Barrie on defense and will likely be paired with Nate Guenin.

Ryan Wilson (knee) was retroactively placed on injured reserve but the Avalanche expect him to be back by October 12th. Wilson has missed all of the preseason with a minor knee injury that he suffered during the team's Burgundy/White Game on Sept. 15. He skated for the first time on Sunday with a knee brace on.

"We're not going to push a player," Roy said. "We are going to make sure that he is 100 percent when he comes back."

Coach Sacco says Ryan Wilson has an ankle injury and is out indefinitely. Home gm tomorrow night vs Dallas.

Wilson has 3 assists and is a +6 in 8 games this season. He has never scored more than 21 points in a season so he isn't a great fantasy option but was off to a good start this season.
