The Red Wings have placed Justin Abdelkader on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout.

Abdelkader had three years left at $4.25M AAV. Buying him out will cost the Red Wings $1.8M AAV in 2021 ($2.4M Savings), $2.3M AAV in 2022 ($1.95M Savings) and $1.06M AAV from 2023 to 2025. Over the last two seasons (Min.120 games played) Abdelkader had the second-fewest points (22) among forwards in the NHL.

Abdelkader (lower-body) is expected to return to the Red Wings lineup on Friday.

Abdelkader has missed the last three games with a lower-body issue but is expected to play in Carolina. Abdelkader fills a fourth-line role for Detroit and comes in with three assists while playing 13:08 ATOI in 10 games this season.

Abdelkader is set to miss his third straight game with a lower-body injury and he was moved to IR to open up a roster spot to bring up Joe Hicketts from Grand Rapids (AHL). He is eligible to come off of injured reserve and play in the Red Wings next game (Friday in Carolina.)

Abdelkader was already ruled out of Tuesday's game vs. the Stars but head coach Jeff Blashill made it clear this morning that the veteran winger won't be back until next week at the earliest and even that may be optimistic.

Abdelkader will miss his second straight game with a lower-body injury that he suffered in Saturday’s loss in Pittsburgh. This is a tough time for Abdelkader to get hurt because he scored in back-to-back games for the first time this season. With Abdelkader out, David Booth will likely remain in the lineup vs.the Stars.

Abdelkader has missed the last 16 games with an MCL sprain, but will return to the lineup tonight in Chicago. Abdelkader will skate on the Red Wings’ third line with Dylan Larkin and Tomas Tatar and comes into play with eight points (4G / 4A) in 22 games this season.

Abdelkader was on the ice for the Red Wings’ morning skate, but will miss tonight’s game vs. the Hurricanes. With Abdelkader out, Andreas Athanasiou will remain in the Red Wings’ lineup. Despite not playing tonight, Abdelkader could be back in the lineup on Thursday.
