The Red Wings have claimed Gemel Smith off of waivers from the Lightning.

Smith has not played this season due to a lower-body injury suffered in training camp. With him nearing a return to the lineup, he was waived in order to send him to the AHL. Detroit claimed him and now he joins his brother, Givani, with the Red Wings. Smith has 24 points (12G / 12A) in 88 career NHL games with the Stars and Lightning.

The Lightning have signed Gemel Smith to a two-year, two-way contract extension.

Smith only played in eight games between the AHL and NHL in 2021. The 27-year-old had three assists in five games with the Lightning but sat out as a healthy scratch most of the time. With some key bottom-6 players hitting the free agent market, Smith could have a spot on the roster to start the 2021-22 season.

Smith has been a healthy scratch for the last three games, but will be back in the lineup vs. the Penguins. Smith has four goals and five assists in 31 games this season. There’s no word on who will come out in favour of Smith, but head coach Ken Hitchcock said Smith will play.

The Stars have recalled Gemel Smith from Texas (AHL).

Smith, 22, was a fourth round pick (104th overall) in 2012 and it looks like he will make his NHL debut on Saturday. The Stars are dealing with injuries to Patrick Sharp and Patrick Eaves, so it looks like Smith will draw in on the fourth line. He had 26 points (13G / 13A) in 65 games with Texas (AHL) last year and one goal in three games to start this season.
