The Panthers have acquired Scott Darling via trade with the Hurricanes but have placed him on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout.

Darling has not played well since signing a big deal in Carolina and is now headed to unrestricted free agency after being bought out. Darling appeared in just eight NHL games last year, spending most of the year in the AHL, where he was 5-8-0 with a 3.40 GAA and .882 SV%.

Darling will start Friday vs. the Capitals.

Darling will make his first NHL start since November 24th. After going to the AHL, Darling was quickly recalled because of an injury to Curtis McElhinney. Darling has struggled to a 3.14 GAA and .892 SV% in seven games this season and should be left on the waiver wire until he can prove he is a capable NHL netminder again.

The Hurricanes have recalled Scott Darling from Charlotte (AHL).

With Curtis McElhinney banged up, Darling quickly returns to the NHL after clearing waivers and being sent down on November 30th. Darling struggled with the Hurricanes this season but has gone 3-1-0 with a 2.35 GAA and .911 SV% in five games with Charlotte. He will likely split time with Petr Mrazek while McElhinney is out.

Darling has cleared waivers and been assigned to Charlotte (AHL).

Some more early-season struggles and Curtis McElhinney playing lights out as of late led to Darling being waived on Thursday. Darling stopped 25 of 26 shots (.962 SV%) in his only AHL action this season. He will get a lot of playing time with the Checkers to try and get his game back on track and could return to the NHL if McElhinney and/or Petr Mrazek struggle.

Darling allowed four goals on 24 shots in the Hurricanes loss to the Blue Jackets last Saturday. The Hurricanes have been rolling with Curtis McElhinney for the last three games, but they’ll turn to Darling on the tail-end of a back-to-back. The 29-year-old has gone 2-3-1 with a 2.99 GAA and .903 SV% since returning to the crease in late-October.

Darling will make his first start of the season after stopping 25 of 26 shots in a win with the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) during his conditioning stint. Tonight he will start on home-ice, where he was 6-7-3 with a 3.24 GAA and .888 SV% in 16 appearances last season. The Bruins are 2-2-2 on the road.

Darling has missed the first nine games of the season with a lower-body injury, but appears ready to return to the Hurricanes crease following a one-game conditioning stint with Charlotte. Darling suffered a lower-body injury in the Hurricanes’ preseason finale and will miss at least a couple of weeks. Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour said that his MRI revealed “nothing major” but it will still cost him some time to start the season.
