Byfuglien May Be Used More on Defense

It appears as if Dustin Byfuglien may be getting primed to play more minutes on defense for his new team this season.  GM Rick Dudley hinted to Chris Vivlamore that it’s a real possibility that Byfuglien could switch to defense this season and be a large part of the Thrasers’ powerplay – meaning good news [...]

Teams Lining up to Settle Before Arbitration

A few weeks ago we released an arbitration list which named the players ready to do battle with their employers. From that list a vast majority settled with the exception of Stanley Cup winner Antti Niemi. Let’s take a short look at who settled and who is still prepared to go to war: James Wisniewski [...]

Ondrej Pavelec Agrees to Terms with Thrashers

According to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, netminder Ondrej Pavelec has agreed to terms with the Atlanta Thrashers.  Vivlamore states the deal will be over two years and likely worth 2.3 million — giving him a 1.15 million cap hit by my count. Pavelec played a turbulent game between the pipes last season, [...]

Arbitration List: Niemi Leads 30 Others to Battle

Exactly 31 players filed for salary arbitration today, excluding the playoff hero Jaroslav Halak. Antti Niemi should get his due raise and the Hawks certainly prepared for it by shipping most of their bottom six to the Eastern Conference.  With Halak settling for under four million a season the Finnish rookie probably has no other [...]

Kubina Returns to Where It All Started

Tampa GM Steve Yzerman was busy at work, Friday, bringing in one of the better offensive defensemen available in Pavel Kubina at $3.85-million a year for two years.  Kubina returns to the team where he spent 8 seasons after they drafted him in the 7th round in 1996.  However, Kubina’s most offensive days actually came [...]

Mason Expected to Take Reduced Role with Atlanta

In what likely means the end of Johan Hedberg’s chances of resigning with the Thrashers, Atlanta GM Rick Dudley locked up Chris Mason for two years at $1.85-million per.  Mason capped off his second straight winning season with a 30-22-8 record and 2.53 GAA and finds himself in a familiar role – trying to bring [...]

Byfuglien Packs His Bags for Atlanta

When you are in a salary cap position like Chicago was in, with names like Patrick Sharp being dangled as trade bait around the league, you’d have to expect a more one-sided deal than this one.  Oddly enough, the GM Stan Bowman’s Hawks actually come out as a slight winner in a deal of “ifs”. [...]

Worried About Zach Bogosian in 2010-11? Don’t Be.

If you were a confident Zach Bogosian owner last season, you were likely perplexed as to why the young Thrashers defenseman could only rack up 23 points in 81 games this season after a solid 19 points in 47 games during his rookie campaign.  He’s a powerplay staple and a minute eater on a team [...]

Afinogenov Likely Gone From Thrashers

According to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Maxim Afinogenov and the Atlanta Thrashers are not close to reaching terms on a new contract.  Too bad. As we mentioned earlier this week, Afinogenov found himself a nice new home in Atlanta breaking the 60 point barrier for the first time in three years and [...]

Fantasy Season in Review: Atlanta Thrashers

Offensive Corps: Nik Antropov led the Thrashers in scoring and firmly established himself as a legitimate number one center in the NHL–although probably a second liner on your fantasy team. The hulking center scored 24 goals and 67 points while mostly playing with Maxim Afinogenov and Ilya Kovalchuk.  He played excellently after Kovalchuk moved to [...]
