Every year we gather some of the finest hockey minds across the NationNetwork to put together a Fantasy Hockey Mock Draft. This year we have nine writers from across the Nation and three loyal Twitter followers to make up our 12-team league. 

We used ESPN Standard Scoring Rules and Rosters when conducting this mock. 

  • Roster: 2C, 2LW, 2RW, 4D, 2G, 4Bench
  • Scoring: Goals, Assists, +/-, Power-Play Points, Shots and Hits (for Skaters) Wins, Shutouts, Goals Against Average and Save Percentage (for Goalies)

Dylan Berthiaume had the No.6 overall pick and I had the No.11 overall pick. Below you can find the results of the Mock Draft and round-by-round analysis from both of us.

Dylan’s Pick: Malkin was a no-brainer here. We have him ranked at number 4 in our top 300 rankings, so I was more than happy to see him fall to 6th overall. ESPN has him ranked 9th for some inexplicable reason, which I’m sure helped him slide down the draft board. Malkin played 78 games last year, making me feel a little bit better about his durability. If he plays a full season 100 points isn’t out of the question, and he should only need to play about 60-65 games to break 80.

Brock’s Pick: I was ecstatic to see Steven Stamkos drop to No.11 overall. I have Stamkos ranked No.6 overall, so this is a definite steal at the bottom of the first-round. Stamkos has 40-goal potential and playing with Nikita Kucherov made him an assist machine last year. There is 40-40 upside, which is almost impossible to find, especially with the second-last pick in the first.

Brock’s Pick: Another steal for me in the second-round. I have Marchand safely ranked as a first-round pick (No.8 overall) this season. He has back-to-back 85-point seasons (despite missing 14 games last year) and plays on the most dominant line in hockey. BOS1 is going to have another outstanding season and 40-50 isn’t out of the question for Marchand—he was on a 41-goal, 62 assists (103 points) per 82-game pace last year. 

Dylan’s Pick: Benn somehow dropped all the way to 19th overall in this draft, giving me a premier player at the thinnest position in fantasy. His consistency is second to none and eases any worries I had about taking the injury-prone Malkin with my first pick. Benn’s missed just six regular season games since the start of the 2013-14 season, picking up 403 points in 404 games across that span. I was surprised to see guys like Forsberg, Giroux, Pastrnak, and Vasilevskiy all go before him.

Dylan’s Pick: A run of defensemen at the end of the second round diluted the player pool just enough for Kessel to still be there for my third-round pick. I actually had the choice between him and Tarasenko, which is crazy. There’s an argument to be made for either player here but having the connection of Malkin and Kessel was just too good to pass up.

Brock’s Pick: My plan early in the draft is always to target high-upside wingers because the left wing and right wing positions are so thin. Luckily, Gaudreau fell to me late in the third-round. I have him ranked at No.21, so this is a full-round later than I think he should go, but I’m not complaining. ‘Johnny Hockey’ is coming off of his best season yet (24G / 60A) and should be a point-per-game player again this year. Since coming into the league, Gaudreau is 13th in the NHL in points and 16th in points-per-game (min 100 games) I will happily take that kind of production at No.35 overall.

Brock’s Pick: I was really hoping that Tarasenko was going to fall to me in the third-round and I could go Tarasenko and Gaudreau, but since he didn’t I was content with taking Gaudreau and then Voracek. The Czech winger is one of the most consistent producers in the NHL and a late-2nd/early-3rd round fantasy pick and I’m picking him up in the fourth. He has shown to have 20-goal, 60-plus assist upside and rarely misses games. It’s not the flashiest pick, but it is safe and reliable. I’ll have to find some goal-scorers later in this draft though. 

Dylan’s Pick: There were some reaches made in the 3rd and 4th rounds, specifically for goaltenders. I’m not the type to invest highly in my goalies, so I was more than happy to see Gibson, Andersen, and Hellebuyck all go in front of me. I went with the best player available again here and got Scheifele. I’m four rounds in and have four legitimate 75-point guys. Not a bad start.

Dylan’s Pick: I needed to start to fill out my roster but wasn’t about to reach for a goalie given what was left on the board. I made Klingberg the 7th defensemen taken in the draft. He tied for 2nd among defensemen in points last season with 67 and pairs nicely with Benn on the powerplay. He was ranked 35th overall in our top 300 rankings and I got him at 54.

Brock’s Pick: Again, I was nervously waiting for Klingberg to fall to me in the fifth, but Dylan made a great pick. So, I settled for the next defenseman on my board, Roman Josi. He is another extremely reliable player. He doesn’t miss a lot of time and has averaged 14 goals and 41 assts (55 points) over the last five years. He’s ranked as my No.5 defenseman, so I will happily take him as my anchor on the blueline.

Brock’s Pick: I strongly considered beefing up my blueline again here and taking John Carlson, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pair Bergeron with Marchand. I’ve always been a fan of stacking lines, especially the best ones in hockey. Bergeron used to be a “safe pick,” good for a 30-30 season but limited upside. Now, he’s an absolute stud—he was on a 38-goal, 42-assist (80 points) per 82-game pace last year. I have him ranked at No.39 overall and picked him up at No.62. Great value. 

Dylan’s Pick: In round 6 I picked up the only defenseman who had more points than Klingberg last season. There’s no red flags in Carlson’s underlying numbers, suggesting a repeat performance is more than doable in 2018-19. His career high 237 shots last year is what has me most excited. Well, that and playing with Ovie on the powerplay. Him and Klingberg give me a solid 1-2 punch on the blueline and it allows me to wait on drafting my third and fourth defensemen.

Dylan’s Pick: I came into round 7 still without a goaltender. I knew there was a serious drop in value after the top three or four goalies left available (Fleury, Dubnyk, Bishop, Schneider) so I needed to take a goalie here. I made Fleury the 11th goalie taken in this draft. He doesn’t need to be anywhere close to as good as he was last year for me to justify this pick. If he’s healthy, 30 wins should be a lock. If I can get league average SV% and GAA from him I’m laughing.

Brock’s Pick: With 12 goalies off of the board, it was time to address my goalies. I was happy to see both Devan Dubnyk (G12) and Ben Bishop (G14) available and planned on taking them both. I went with Bishop first because I thought there was a higher chance of Dubnyk making it through the next two picks, we’ll see if it works.

Brock’s Pick: Boom! It worked. Now I have two goalies who will play 60-plus games with 35-plus wins and GAA under 2.50 and SV% over .915. The only way I can make this goaltending situation better is if I can steal Antti Raanta late, like I plan to do. 

Dylan’s Pick: I’m actually pretty sure the only reason I got Schneider this late is because ESPN forgot to project his stats and he got ranked 946th overall by default. That’s why you print out a copy of the DFO top 300 before your draft, kids! Great second goalie for me at this point in the draft.

Dylan’s Pick: I spent the last few rounds filling out my roster and now I can get back to taking the best player available in round 9 and LOL OMG Sean Monahan is still there. I debated picking him two rounds earlier. I already have two centres on my roster, but the value is just too good here. Getting a guy who’s pretty much a lock for 30-30 in the ninth round is silly.

Brock’s Pick: With almost all of my forward slots filled, my goalies addressed, I turned my focus back to the defensemen. Much to my surprise, Ekman-Larsson was still available. O.E.L is my No.18 ranked defenseman, so now I have a quality No.1 and No.2 defensemen.

Brock’s Pick: This was easily my least favourite pick of the draft. The right wings were getting really thin and I needed to add one to my starting lineup. Fully believing Jordan Eberle (still available) would drop down the board because of his situation in New York, I reached for Atkinson. He has fired over 200 shots in five straight seasons and is a safe bet for 25 goals and has 30-30 upside while playing on a line with Pierre-Luc Dubois and Artemi Panarin. I don’t love it, but I’m O.K. with it. 

Dylan’s Pick: Same thing as round 9 but now Getzlaf. The man had 61 points in 56 games last year. Low goal totals be damned, I should never be getting a point per game player in the 10th round.

Round 11

Dylan’s Pick: After spoiling myself in rounds 9 and 10, I needed to get back to filling out my roster in round 11. I’m still without a 2nd left and right winger, but I feel fine about it given what’s left on the board. Hoffman is by far the best winger available at this point and should be in for a career year on the Panthers’ second line. For some reason he only has left wing eligibility on ESPN, but he should pick up right wing sooner than later.

Brock’s Pick: I was really happy to see a run of centres in the 10th round because I was set with Stamkos and Bergeron. I thought about adding Getzlaf, but was worried how bad my starting RW would be if I didn’t take Atkinson. In the 11th I was very surprised to see Giordano still on the board. I have him ranked as the No.24 defenseman, so he’s an excellent option as a No.3 fantasy blueliner. Noah Hanifin doesn’t pose as much of a threat to his power-play time as Dougie Hamilton did, so Giordano could enjoy a return to 45-50 points. 

Round 12

Brock’s Pick: Parayko was my 12th round target, but Jon stole him right in front of me. So, I shifted my focus to bolstering my right wingers. Atkinson is solid, but I would like a strong third option, so I took Eberle. Like I expected he dropped—I have him at No.101 but drafted him at No.134. Losing Tavares is a tough pill to swallow, but Eberle should see a lot of playing time with Barzal…so he’ll be just fine. 

Dylan’s Pick: Taking Schwartz here leaves me without a second right winger, but I do expect Hoffman to pick up the eligibility soon. Schwartz should be back on the top line with Tarasenko this season and was by far the best winger available. I should still be able to pick up Corey Perry or Kyle Palmieri to play right wing with one of my next few picks.

Dylan’s Pick: Taking two left wingers in rounds 11 and 12 set the stage for me to take Perry here. He’s not the prolific goal scorer he once was, but he should continue to see heavy minutes on the top line with his buddy Getzlaf, whom I drafted earlier. He still has 25-goal, 60-point upside.

Brock’s Pick: Fowler is ranked just two spots below Parayko in my Top 300, so I was happy to get him 22 spots after Parayko went. He plays massive minutes in Randy Carlyle’s system and has been a consistent source of goals and 30-plus points on the blueline. As my No.4 defenseman, I’ll gladly take the No.31 ranked D.

Brock’s Pick: Nugent-Hopkins will get dual-position eligibility (C/LW) eventually, so he fills two needs for me, plus he’s expected to play with McDavid this season. That’s enough for me to take a chance on the former No.1 overall pick in the 14th round. 

Dylan’s Pick: Loading up on Klingberg and Carlson earlier afforded me the luxury of waiting on taking my next defenseman. At this point, there’s still about 5 or 6 defensemen available that I really like, but only one guy I’m interested in as my third goalie. Hutton led the league in SV% last season and comes into 2018-19 with an uncontested number-one job for the first time in his career. Playing for the Sabres will hurt his GAA, but he can provide a ton of value as my 3rd goalie if I’m smart about when to play him. Cupcake matchups only for you, Carter.

Dylan’s Pick: Miller is one of my favourite targets on defense this pre-season, and I won’t be surprised if he ends up on every one of my teams. He put up 10 goals and 177 shots despite playing under 20 minutes a game last season. He already mans the point on the Golden Knights’ top powerplay unit, and he’s due for an increase in 5v5 time given the suspension to fellow right-handed defenseman Nate Schmidt. He’s got an absolute bomb from the point and should have no problem getting back to 10 goals and 40 points this season. Great value at this point in the draft.

Brock’s Pick: With Eberle as my reserve RW and RNH as my backup LW eventually, I solidified my centres with Horvat. He was on-pace for a 30-30 season last year before getting hurt and will play huge minutes with Brock Boeser atop the Canucks lineup this year. He’s a great reserve C with a lot of upside.

Brock’s Pick: My defensemen and goalies are rock-solid, my only concern is at right wing. Voracek, Atkinson and Eberle isn’t terrible, but adding Gallagher in the last-round gives me another winger with 30-plus goal upside—especially since he’s seemingly the only shooter left in Montreal. 

Dylan’s Pick: Speaking of great value this late in the draft! I only feel better about this pick this morning after reading that Faulk and Dougie Hamilton are working on the top powerplay unit together. Hamilton was a serious threat to Faulk’s PP time, but it looks like the Hurricanes will opt to go with two defensemen on their top unit. His 3.8 SH% is due for a bounce back this year, and maintaining that top powerplay spot will go a long way towards getting Faulk back to 15 goals.
