Alex Ovechkin scores baseball-like game-winner, sticks it to Pittsburgh fans

The Washington Capitals needed a hero in Game 3 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Alex Ovechkin delivered.

Ovechkin scored the game-winning goal with 1:07 remaining to propel the Capitals to a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series with Pittsburgh.

After taking a pass from Nicklas Backstrom,  Ovechkin fired the puck off the post before staying with it and using a baseball-like swat to bat it into the goal cage.

Ovechkin was clearly fired up after the goal, celebrating in front of the Pittsburgh crowd.

It was the fourth straight playoff game with a goal for Ovechkin, who helped the Capitals take a 2-1 series lead. The Russian sniper now has eight goals and five assists for 13 points in just nine playoff games this season. He’s sitting on 103 points in 106 playoff games in his career.

The Capitals and Penguins are meeting in the playoffs in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third straight season. This is also the fourth time Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby are facing off since they entered the NHL together at the start of the 2005-06 season.

Ovechkin and the Capitals are looking to advance beyond the second round for the first time since they made their lone Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1998.

Game 4 is Thursday night in Pittsburgh.
