*UPDATE* – Bolland suffers leg laceration in Leafs’ 4-0 loss

Per @MapleLeafs November 4 – 11:02 a.m – Dave Bolland had successful surgery to repair a severed tendon on the outside of his left ankle. He is out indefinitely

Per James Mirtle November 4 – 3:30 p.m – The Toronto Maple Leafs declined to provide a detailed update, but it’s clear that centre Dave Bolland’s ankle injury is likely to keep him out until deep into their season. And perhaps even for almost all of it.

“It’s too early to say,” Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle said of how long he will be out. “They don’t really give you that. They’ll say that it’s five months and then we hope it’s two. We don’t really know until the healing process starts and they’ll do an assessment. Then we’ll get more tightened in on the time frame for you.”

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Dave Bolland suffered a leg laceration in a collision with Zack Kassian on Saturday night.

Kassian’s skate came up and appeared to cut Bolland’s leg just above his skate as he pushed him into the corner, early in the second period. Bolland went down and stayed down while Kassian proceeded to score the Cancuks second goal shortly after. Bolland had to be helped off of the ice and was unable to put any weight on his left leg.

Bolland had to leave the arena on a stretcher and was brought to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle did not offer much insight into what Bolland is dealing with, but compared it to the cut that Erik Karlsson suffered last season.

Karlsson had three-quarters of his Achilles tendon severed and missed 10-weeks. More details will be released about Bolland’s injury, but should it be his Achilles – he will likely miss more than the 10 weeks that Karlsson missed. The Swede’s recovery was believed to be outrageously quick and almost superhuman.

This is a tough break for the Maple Leafs, who continue to be decimated by injuries. Toronto have not had their entire lineup together for a game this season. At one point or another they have been without James van Riemsdyk, Joffrey LupulNikolai Kulemin, Fraser McLaren, Mark Fraser (on IR), Tyler Bozak (on IR) and now Bolland because of injuries. They also lost David Clarkson to a 10-game suspension to begin the season.

According to Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star, Bolland was wearing kevlar socks that are cut-resistant, but evidently not cut-proof. The 27-year-old was acquired from Chicago for a pair of picks at this year’s NHL Entry Draft. He was enjoying a strong start with six goals and four assists in 15 games.

Expect an update from the Maple Leafs today or tomorrow. At that time I will update this article with Bolland’s latest status. For now consider him out indefinitely. If you are in a keeper league with an IR spot, you can hold onto him but in a one-year league you can drop him because he will likely miss an extended period of time.
