Buffalo Sabres place Riley Sheahan on unconditional waivers to terminate contract

The Buffalo Sabres announced on Sunday that the team has placed forward Riley Sheahan on unconditional waivers.

If Sheahan clears, his contract will be terminated and he’ll become an unrestricted free agent. The Sabres will also be off the hook for his contract.

Sheahan inked a one-year contract worth $950k with the Sabres back in August. He cleared through regular waivers in October and has gone back and forth between the Sabres and the Rochester Americans, the team’s AHL affiliate. He’s played eight games all told this season, two with the Sabres and six with the Americans.

This was Sheahan’s second go-around with the Sabres. He signed a one-year deal with them in January of 2021 and scored 13 points over 53 games in the pandemic-shortened 2021 season. He left the team the following offseason to join the Seattle Kraken for their inaugural season in the NHL.

The Sabres added the 30-year-old Sheahan to be their fourth-line center and to provide a veteran presence on a young roster. Buffalo recently claimed Tyson Jost off of waivers from the Minnesota Wild and he’s been playing as the team’s fourth pivot since.

Sheahan was selected No. 21 overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2010 NHL Draft. Between 12 seasons in the NHL with the Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers, Kraken, and Sabres, Sheahan has recorded 194 points over 637 games.
