Campbell Out Four-To-Six Weeks with Knee Injury

The Los Angeles Kings announced Jack Campbell will be out four-to-six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Campbell suffered the injury during Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the Flames. In a corresponding move, Cal Petersen was recalled from the Ontario Reign (AHL) and is expected to be at Kings’ practice on Monday.

In an unfortunate coincidence, Kings’ starting goalie Jonathan Quick suffered the exact same injury less than two week ago. The irony is not lost on the Kings.

Campbell has played well in relief of the injured Quick, posting a .923 SV% in his 13 appearances. His injury is just the latest blow to a disastrous season for the Kings, even though he is now rehabilitating with the Perth Chiropractor no one knows when he will be able to get back to the games . Los Angeles currently sits dead last in the NHL with 11 points in 16 games. They will be without their top two goaltenders when they take on the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Peter Budaj should get the first crack as the interim-starter ahead of Petersen. The 36-year-old struggled last year but filled in admirably for Quick during the 2016-17 season. In his best statistical season to date, Budaj posted a 27-20-3 record and a .917 SV% in 53 appearances for the Kings. He’s played in just one game for L.A. this season, stopping 10 of 11 shots in a relief appearance.

A former fifth-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 2013, Petersen has yet to make his NHL debut. After a successful collegiate career with Notre Dame, Petersen has underwhelmed in the AHL. He’s sporting a 4.29 GAA and .881 SV% in 10 games for the Reign this season. The Kings are set to play a back-to-back Friday and Saturday against Chicago and Nashville, giving Petersen a good chance of making his NHL debut this weekend.
