Capitals Acquire Hagelin from Kings

For the second time this season, Carl Hagelin is on the move. The Los Angeles Kings traded Hagelin to the Washington Capitals on Thursday for a pair of draft picks. Los Angeles will receive Washington’s third-round pick in 2019 and a conditional sixth-round pick in 2020. As part of the deal, the Kings will retain 50% of Hagelin’s $3.75-million cap-hit.

Hagelin registered one goal and two assists in 16 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins before being traded to Los Angeles on November 14. His struggles continued in LA, where he compiled just one goal and four assists in 22 games. Hagelin is a cheap rental acquired by the Capitals to add some depth to their top-nine group of forwards. He is an unrestricted free-agent at the end of the season.

“We are pleased to welcome Carl to our organization,” said Capitals’ general manager Brian MacLellan. “We felt this trade enables us to add depth up front and provides us with a veteran player with a tremendous amount of speed to help us on the penalty kill.”

Fourth Time’s The Charm

Hagelin has now been traded four times in his eight-year career. He’s logged 90 goals and 140 assists across 526 career games. He’s never had more than 39 points in a single season. Hagelin is set to make his Capitals debut on Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres.
