Corvo Earning a Second Tryout on Your Fantasy Team

You likely drafted Joe Corvo (38% owned) in the near-end of your draft this season with the hopes of a sleeper performance, or maybe you picked him up when he returned from injury and hoped he’d find his stride.  Either way, he’s likely not on your team anymore and with good reason.

He’s missed just under half the season with injuries and he’s playing for a team without many fantasy studs on it.  He’s only got 12 points in the 34 games he has played and hasn’t registered a point since returning from a leg laceration on February 3.

However, with Wednesday’s trade to the Capitals, we could see a glimpse of the 2008-09 Corvo who put up 38 points for a contending Hurricanes team – 22 of those points were on the powerplay.  He finished the ’08-09 season strong, racking up a solid 10 points in 13 games in March.  Simply because Corvo is being surrounded with some of the best offensive ability in the game and he brings an added touch of offense to a Capitals top-6 that drop off considerably after Mike Green.  He’ll log plenty of minutes – he was second on the Hurricanes in average time on ice with 25:13 per game – and most likely take over one of the points on the Capitals still-very-good second powerplay unit.

George McPhee via Tarik El Bashir tells it best:

“Corvo was the top defenseman available in our minds, and we got him, and he plays a lot. He plays both ends of the rink, he can defend, he spends a lot of time on the PK but he’ll generate offense, which is the type of defenseman we like.”

With all of the sub-par performances by defensemen this season, there’s a good shot Corvo deserves a spot on your roster.
