Nicklas Backstrom had a pair of goals on Thursday night to lead the Capitals to a 4-2 win over the Hurricanes in Game 1 of this best-of-seven first-round playoff series, paying off on the betting lines as a -155 favorite in an OVER result. That was Washington’s sixth win in its last eight games, while Carolina saw a three-game winning streak come to an end. John Carlson added three assists for the Capitals; Andrei Svechnikov had both goals for the Hurricanes.

Opening NHL Odds: Predators -159 Favorites

The Stars pulled off an underdog victory in Game 1 of this series on Wednesday night, winning 3-2 at +140 on the NHL odds in a game that was a PUSH on the five-goal total at sportsbooks. Dallas is now 6-2 in its past eight games, as rookie Miro Heiskanen picked up two points in Game 1 and Ben Bishop made 30 saves. The Predators had been listed as -160 betting favorites on Wednesday, and had won five of their past six contests. Defensemen P.K. Subban and Roman Josi had the two goals for the Predators in Wednesday night’s defeat.

Maple Leafs at Bruins | OddsShark Matchup Report

Opening NHL Odds: Bruins -167 Favorites

Mitch Marner scored twice on Thursday night to lead the Maple Leafs to a 4-1 win over the Bruins and a 1-0 series lead as +125 underdogs. That result marked Toronto’s fifth UNDER result in its past six games, and put an end to its three-game losing streak. Frederik Anderson made 37 saves for the Maple Leafs on Thursday, with Patrice Bergeron scoring Boston’s lone goal in the contest. Boston has been tagged with a loss in four of its six most recent outings.

Avalanche at Flames | OddsShark Matchup Report

Opening NHL Odds: Flames -240 Favorites

Mike Smith turned in a 26-save shutout on Thursday night as the Flames topped the Avalanche 4-0 in Game 1 of their first-round series as -200 home betting favorites. That was Calgary’s third straight UNDER result, and the fourth for Colorado in its last six outings. Matthew Tkachuk led the way for Calgary on offense with a pair of goals, with Andrew Mangiapane and Mikael Backlund also scoring. Colorado has lost three of its past five games.
