Opening NHL Odds: Hurricanes -120 Favorites

The Eastern Conference final has a chance to become a competitive series if Carolina can find a way to stay unbeaten at home in Game 3 on Tuesday. The Hurricanes are the only team in the playoffs who have not lost on home ice, going a perfect 5-0 and outscoring opponents by an impressive 22-7 margin so far.

They will lean on that advantage again here knowing that another loss would put them one step closer to elimination as they chase their second Stanley Cup.

Carolina surrendered more goals in losing the first two games at Boston (11) than in the team’s previous six postseason games combined (10), which all resulted in wins. The Bruins could be vulnerable on the road in this spot too considering they have dropped the first game away from home in each of their previous two series before rallying to win them. But Boston is riding a five-game winning streak following a 6-2 rout as a -160 favorite in Game 2 on Sunday.

The Bruins have looked dominant offensively while goaltender Tuukka Rask continues to lead the way defensively as the favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as postseason MVP. Rask has done a great job between the pipes going back to the end of Boston’s second-round series versus the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The same cannot be said for counterpart Petr Mrazek of the Hurricanes since he has returned from a lower-body injury suffered in Game 2 against the New York Islanders in the last round. The good news for Carolina is that Curtis McElhinney is a solid backup option that could be used as early as Game 3 if head coach Rod Brind’Amour decides to switch things up. McElhinney earned wins over New York in Games 3 and 4 of that series, and he was solid during the regular season with a 20-11-2 mark, 2.58 goals-against average and .912 save percentage.

It is also worth noting that the OVER has cashed in four straight for the Hurricanes overall and three in a row at home, and it is 3-1 in the last four for the Bruins according to the OddsShark NHL Database.
