Opening NHL Odds: Blues -140 Favorites

Yet another controversial no-call went in favor of the Sharks to close out their 5-4 overtime victory in Game 3 of the Western Conference final on Wednesday, but they also did a lot of things right to put themselves in position for the winning goal.

While the Blues definitely should have a beef with the hand pass that was not called in OT before Erik Karlsson scored his second goal of the game, they surrendered the tying score to Logan Couture with 1:01 remaining in regulation to force the extra session. San Jose led 2-0 after the first period, gave up four goals in the second and then recorded the tying tally on Couture’s NHL-best 14th of the playoffs.

The lesson that should be learned by St. Louis here is you need to play the full 60 minutes, something the Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche found out the hard way in losing each of the previous two series. The Sharks now hold a 2-1 series lead after cashing as +120 road underdogs, with the OVER improving to a perfect 3-0 in the first three games. They are 3-2 in their last five games away from home as well since dropping the first two at Vegas in the first round.

The Blues must mentally get over the referees to even the series as comparable home favorites in Game 4, and keeping it lower-scoring would likely work to their benefit. They are 1-3 in their last four at the Enterprise Center and 3-5 overall there this postseason, and that trend will need to change quickly in order to keep this matchup competitive. Another victory by San Jose would obviously put the team in position to clinch back at home in Game 5, something St. Louis desperately wants to avoid.

The Blues are 1-3 in their last four games when the total goes OVER, according to the OddsShark NHL Database, but they are 3-1 in their past four when it goes UNDER, which is worth noting.
