Opening NHL Odds: Blues -120 Favorites

Boston is in danger of following in the footsteps of the San Jose Sharks and losing three straight games to St. Louis after holding a 2-1 series lead in the 2019 Stanley Cup Final.

The Sharks were beat up by the Blues in six grueling games, eventually falling 5-1 at the Enterprise Center to close out the Western Conference Final. Now the Bruins could be next in line after losing 2-1 as -160 home favorites in Game 5 on Thursday, with goaltender Tuukka Rask giving up two goals or more for the fifth time in the series. Rask was nearly unstoppable in the first three rounds of the playoffs, but St. Louis has somehow solved him, although Boston fans would definitely argue that the latest game-winning goal is disputable.

David Perron scored for the Blues after what looked like a tripping penalty on Tyler Bozak on Noel Acciari about halfway through the third period, continuing a brutal postseason for the officials. Bettors may remember that San Jose got away with a hand pass on the game-winning overtime goal in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final that resulted in a 5-4 victory before St. Louis reeled off three consecutive wins.

Blues rookie goalie Jordan Binnington did turn in one of his best performances of the playoffs with 38 saves on 39 shots, and he will be counted on again to come through at home on Sunday in another potential Game 6 clincher.

St. Louis has won two of the previous three series at home in Game 6, going 3-0 in clinching opportunities overall, including a Game 7 victory against the Dallas Stars in the second round. The Blues have also continued to find tremendous success in lower-scoring affairs, improving to 10-2 in their last 12 games when there are five goals or less scored.

The UNDER is 10-0-2 in those games according to the OddsShark NHL Database but cashed for just the second time in this series, with an average of 6.5 goals scored in the previous four. Despite losing Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Bruins are still 5-1 in their past six road games, with Rask holding opponents to one goal or less four times, so they should be confident.
