UPDATE: Elliott out week-to-week; Allen becomes starter

The St. Louis Blues announced that goaltender Brian Elliott is week-to-week with a lower-body injury that he suffered in Tuesday’s shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Elliott had his leg tangled-up underneath him in the second period of yesterday’s game vs. the Senators. It is believed that Elliott suffered a sprained right knee on the play and it will cost him a couple of weeks at least. Elliott had saved all 16 shots he had faced and departed the game with a 2-0 lead intact. Rookie Jake Allen entered the game and gave up two goals on 17 shots before the Blues were downed in the shootout.

To this point in the season Elliott had started 14 games to Allen’s eight. Both goalies have played very well—Elliott is 8-4-1 with a 1.82 GAA and .931 SV%, while Allen is 6-2-1 with a 2.12 GAA and .920 SV%. Elliott was viewed as the Blues’ starter, but now the ball is in Allen’s court.

The 24-year-old has waited several years to be an NHL starter and we are about to see what he can really do. Shockingly enough, Allen is only owned in 21% of Yahoo! leagues and 48.5% of ESPN leagues. The Blues give up the second fewest shots in the league at 26.7 per game, making their goaltenders great fantasy commodities. It can be frustrating at times to own them in a timeshare, but now that Allen stands alone at the top of the Blues’ depth chart, he is a must-own and is a low-end fantasy number-1 for the foreseeable future.

With Elliott sidelined to the Blues have recalled Jordan Binnington from Chicago to serve as Jake Allen’s backup. Binnington has gone 6-2-1 with a 1.89 GAA and .925 SV% in nine AHL appearances this season.

According to Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Blues have agreed to bring veteran Martin Brodeur to practice on Friday on a Tryout contract. He will likely practice with the team over the weekend, before the Blues decide whether or not they want to sign the future Hall of Famer to a contract.

Here’s a little something from Jake Allen earlier this season:
