McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Nov. 3 – Sam Montembeault vs. Connor Hellebuyck

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Thu. Nov. 3, 2022:

Why I like this matchup:

It’s a sneaky good matchup between two goalies that have performed really well of late. Hellebuyck has been a rock for Winnipeg. And Montembeault looks like he’s finding his stride as a full-time NHL goaltender.

What to watch for:

In Hellebuyck’s last outing against the Vegas Golden Knights, he allowed just two goals on 48 shots. It might have been the best game I’ve ever seen him play. Hellebuyck was in control, making the routine saves look easy. But he also made several reactionary saves that brought me out of my seat. Hellebuyck has only allowed six goals on the last 111 shots he’s faced.

Montembeault has also been fantastic during the 2022-23 campaign. The 26-year old backstop has authored wins over the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins in his last two starts. In particular, Montembeault was outstanding against Buffalo, making 43 saves. He’s always had above-average athleticism, but in the past, control and consistency were concerns. So far this year each seems to be improved upon.

What fantasy owners should do:

Despite Montembeault’s recent success, I still think playing a Canadiens goaltender is a gamble. Hellebuyck is much more of a sure bet. I’d start the Winnipeg goalie and be cautious with any decision to play Montembeault.

Bottom line for Samuel Montembeault:

It’s fun to be the underdog, but it’s also demanding. Stay simple and avoid chasing the game.

Bottom line for Connor Hellebuyck:

He’ll need active hands against Montreal sniper Cole Caufield and playmaker Nick Suzuki.
