It looks like the New York Rangers have finally found a captain.

According to Kevin Weekes, the Rangers will name defenseman Jacob Trouba the 28th captain in franchise history on Tuesday…

Trouba continues a line of American players serving as captain of the Rangers, dating back to 2008-09 when Chris Drury, who’s now the team’s general manager, was given the captaincy.

The Rangers haven’t had a captain since the 2017-18 season. Ryan McDonagh wore the “C” between 2014-15 and 2017-18 when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. New York’s previous captain before that was Ryan Callahan, who was also traded to Tampa Bay in 2014.

The Rangers acquired Trouba from the Winnipeg Jets in 2019 and signed him to a seven-year, $56 million contract soon after that. In three seasons with the Rangers, Trouba has scored 20 goals and 78 points over 189 games. He’s worn the “A” as an assistant captain and has been praised by both his former head coach, David Quinn, and current head coach, Gerard Gallant, for his leadership.
