The Vancouver Canucks have not made the playoffs in the last four seasons but appear to be at the tail-end of their full rebuild.

Despite not picking any higher than No.5 overall, the Canucks have built an impressive stable of prospects over the last few seasons. Brock Boeser (No.23 overall in 2015) has averaged 34 goals per 82 games over the last two seasons (despite missing a total of 33 games). Elias Pettersson (No.5 in 2017) is a Calder Trophy Finalist this season after picking up 66 points (28G / 38A) in 71 games this season. Thatcher Demko (No.36 in 2014) and Michael DiPietro (No.64 in 2017) are two of the top goalie prospects in the NHL and will give the Canucks two great goaltending options in the future. Quinn Hughes (No.7 in 2018)is considered one of the top D prospects in the NHL and had three assists in five NHL games to close out the 2019 season, after recording 33 points (5G / 28A) in 32 games at the University of Michigan. Matthew Boldy — LW — United States 🇺🇸

Boldy is a player who quickly rose up the draft ranks throughout the 2019 season. Boldy hit a huge growth spurt and shot up to 6-foot-2, 192 lbs. this season but it didn’t affect his skating or hands at all. Boldy might be the most creative and highly skilled players in the draft, who was third among USNTDP skaters in goals (33) and fourth in points (81) despite being overshadowed by other players and playing a slightly limited role.

The way the Canucks have picked a strong collection of centres, defensemen and goalies in recent years will allow them to take the best available winger at No.10 and that player is Boldy. He also impressed at the U18 World Juniors, where he had 12 points (3G / 9A) in seven games—trailing only Jack Hughes (20 points) and Cole Caufield (18) among US skaters.

In drafting Boldy, the Canucks could one day have Boldy on the left-side with Pettersson and Boeser on their top line. Imagine that first line, each player over 6-foot and you mix Boldy’s creativity with Pettersson’s and Boldy’s impressive shot with Boeser’s deadly release, and you have an extremely dangerous top-unit for years to come. If the Oilers end up going with  Trevor Zegras instead of Caufield, he would also fit the bill for Vancouver.

Scouting Report

Boldy was one of the most fascinating prospects to watch all season. There were significant highs in his season, through the month of October I thought he outplayed Hughes in nearly every game. In terms of pure talent, he’s top five in the class. Boldy does have warts in his profile, but I still feel confident projecting him as a potential top-line forward in the NHL. — Corey Pronman (The Athletic)
