Nightly Scrap: Blues extend streak; Flyers fall to Caps

After a powerplay goal by Mike Green in overtime, the Philadelphia Flyers snapped their six game winning streak against the Washington Capitals.

In an exciting, yet even match the two teams traded first period goals from Nikolai Zherdev and Eric Fehr and second period goals by Ville Leino and Alexander Semin.  Both rookie goaltenders, Braden Holtby and Sergei Bobrovsky, kept the game tied in the third before entering extra innings.  When all was said and done, the young Holtby received his second win in three days and the Capitals won their fourth straight.

Meanwhile, the Flyers’ division rival New York Rangers hosted the St. Louis Blues, who had won six straight as well.  Behind Ty Conklin, center Alex Steen scored two goals as the team managed to solve backup Martin Biron and beat him 2-0 for their seventh straight win.  Conklin and starting goalie Jaroslav Halak have now combined for four shutouts in only the 12th game of the year.

In a rematch of last week’s slug-fest, both Corey Crawford and Nikolai Khabibulin managed to keep pucks out of the nets.  Former Oiler Fernando Pisani broke the scoring in the third period before his old team mounted their third period comeback.  Kurtis Foster tied the game with a powerplay goal and 14 seconds later Sam Gagner got the go ahead marker, winning for the first time since last Friday, also against the Blackhawks.

Over in Anaheim, the Ducks handed the Nashville Predators their fifth straight loss.  The team’s second line of Jason Blake, Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu combined for six points but it was journeyman defenseman Paul Mara who scored the fifth goals and game winner with two seconds left in regulation.  Backup Anders Lindback was delivered his first loss in regulation and allowed more than three goals for the first time this season.

Clearly the injuries for the Preds are starting to add up as they desperately need Ryan Suter back in the lineup, amongst others.
