Petr Mrazek signs in Toronto, Frederik Andersen signs in Carolina

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes have done a free-agent goaltender swap.

According to Frank Seravalli, the Leafs have inked @Petr Mrazek to a three-year contract with a cap hit of around $3,800,000 annually. Also, there are multiple reports saying that @Frederik Andersen is closing in on a deal with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Both goalies had difficult, injury-riddled seasons in 2021. Mrazek played in just 12 games for the Hurricanes, but posted a sparkling .923 save percentage. Andersen, on the other hand, lost his starting gig to @Jack Campbell last season and put up a career-low .895 save percentage over 24 games.

Originally drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, Mrazek inked a one-year, show-me deal in free agency with Carolina in 2018. After a strong showing, he re-signed with the Hurricanes on a two-year deal worth $3,125,000 annually.

Andersen was acquired by the Leafs back in 2016 in exchange for a first- and second-round pick. He had been a very strong backup behind @John Gibson and was excellent for Toronto for four seasons. In 2021, though, injuries hampered Andersen’s play, and the team ultimately decided to move on.

Toronto will operate with Mrazek and Campbell as their tandem while the Hurricanes will need to find another goaltender to play alongside Andersen, as the team moved @Alex Nedeljkovic to Detroit earlier this off-season.
