Cowen will be bought out by the Maple Leafs and will become an unrestricted free agent. Cowen never appeared in a game with Toronto after being acquired from the Senators. He had four assists and a plus-7 rating in 37 games with Ottawa.

Cowen, 25, was the ninth overall pick in 2009 but has yet to live up to his draft position. He has often served as a healthy scratch this season, including the last three games before the trade and has just four assists in 37 games overall. He plays a physical brand of hockey but needs a lot of work on his skating. Cowen has one year left on his current deal, which carries a $4.5 million dollar cap-hit.
Cowen will be in the lineup for the first time since December 29th. Marc Methot will come out of the lineup due to an injury and the Senators are hoping Cowen’s time off will help rejuvenate him.
Cowen will sit on Saturday vs. the Rangers because of a lower-body injury. With Cowen out, Patrick Wiercioch will be back in the lineup after being a healthy scratch on Thursday. Cowen is listed as day-to-day.

Cowen is great defensively but has yet to completely develop into a two-way defenseman. In his first full season he scored five times and added 12 assists in 82 games, a total he will look to build on in 2013-14. At 6-foot-5, 230 lbs. and just 22-years-old Cowen could become a force to be reckoned with, however until he starts producing more offensively he should remain on the waiver wire.
