Chris Pronger News

Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Chris Pronger is officially, unofficially retired. In an interview with The Hockey News, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren confirmed that the 39-year-old defenceman’s playing days are over. "I'll say it, Chris is never going to play again," Holmgren said. "I have no problems saying it.

Pronger hasn’t played since 2011 as a result of post-concussion symptoms and an eye injury. The former Flyers captain has yet to officially retire, in part because if he did he would forfeit $7 million in salary in 2013-14 and $4 million next year. The Flyers signed Pronger to a seven-year, $34.55 million contract in 2009.

Pronger not announcing retirement, sounds like he's still trying to get himself healthy. Says he's improving.

Pronger also stated that he still gets dizzy, gets headaches and has blurred vision from time-to-time. Pronger has been dealing with concussion and vision issues since being highsticked by Maple Leafs forward Nikolai Kulemin on October 24, 2011.

“They won’t have an answer on Pronger,” said one source. “They know that already. If they think he may not be back next year and have to throw caution to the wind, and spend, they’ll do it.”

Pronger may not be healthy enough to start next season due to this recent concussion.

Chris Pronger is still in Pittsburgh as of this hour, went out there early this morning for appt w/ Dr. Mickey Collins. No update yet.

Pronger remains out indefinitely and far from getting back onto the ice. The team's captain has been sidelined since November 19th and should remain on IR for the time being.

While Chris' knee is improving, he has struggled with other issues that are concussion-like symptoms. Chris will see Dr. Joe Maroon and Dr. Mickey Collins on Wednesday, December 14th in Pittsburgh for further evaluation. Chris will be out indefinetly.

Really bad news for fantasy hockey owners. May be time to drop or trade the team's captain as he very well could miss a significant chunk of the season.

Pronger is 37. He said he will start his knee rehab on Friday. The Flyers said he will be back in a little less than four weeks. Pronger said it could be three to six weeks.

As a fantasy hockey owner, you can breathe a sigh of relief that he was at least placed on IR. The Flyers are expected to use a forward on the power play and some combination of rookies Marc-Andre Bourdon and Kevin Marshall.

“Chris will have surgery on his left knee tomorrow afternoon. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Peter DeLuca. The procedure will clean out some loose particles that have given Chris some problems over the last month or so. "

Pronger's return date is scheduled for the Winter Classic. In the meantime, look for Kevin Marshall to stay in the lineup. Hopefully Yahoo! will now add him to IR.

Among the wounded was defenseman Chris Pronger, who first took to the practice ice on November 4th in his recovery from a nasty eye injury. Less than a week later, he may just be ready to return to game action.

Expect Pronger to return tonight and lead the blue line from the top pairing. The team's captain scored a goal and seven points through eight games before missing the past six games.

Pronger says he will have to see how he feels after morning skate tomorrow before figuring out if he will play against Tampa.

Keep an eye on the situation but it seems like Pronger gets back into the lineup tomorrow. The team's captain scored a goal and seven points through eight games before missing the past six games.

Pronger is again skating with Carle in practice, a good sign that he could, and I stress could, be ready to play tomorrow night in Tampa.

Pronger on his visor: "It IS clear. So I CAN see through it." Still doesn't like it. Hasn't worn one since playing in juniors.

Pronger may have a slight adjustment period once he returns from his eye injury. Through his first eight games, the team's captain scored a goal and seven points.
