ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled center Mattias Sjogren (MAT-tie-us SHOW-gren) from Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League (SEL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Sjogren was a late cut from training camp but might be able to help the Caps on their playoff run. At the very least, he will be a nice black ace for practices.

Capitals prospect Mattias Sjogren has left the Hershey Bears and is considering a return to Sweden, Capitals general manager George McPhee confirmed Tuesday night.

Doesn't sound like Sjogren will be playing for the Caps, or in the NHL for that matter, this season.

Although there's a provision in Mattias Sjogren's contract that would allow him to go back to Sweden, McPhee says he doesn't expect him to.

The 23-year-old pivot played for Farjestads BK Karlstad of the SEL last season and could have signed with any team this past offseason but chose the Capitals. He should be one of the team's first callups.

Cuts came Tuesday in the form of defenseman Dmitry Orlov and centers Cody Eakin and Mattias Sjogren, who were sent to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.

No immediate fantasy hockey value in the AHL.

“Both are good organizations, but you have to choose,” said Sjogren, who is battling 20-year-old rookie Cody Eakin for a spot on the Capitals’ opening night roster. “You never know which team is the best choice, but Washington made a very good impression and I want to play here.”

The 23-year-old pivot played for Farjestads BK Karlstad of the SEL last season and could have signed with any team this past offseason but chose the Capitals. Sounds like he would be playing in a third or fourth line role if he makes the team.
