Weegar signs an 8 X $6.25 million contract with the Flames after being acquired in the offseason as part of the Jonathan Huberdeau and Matthew Tkachuk mega deal. The 28-year-old comes off an 8-goal, 44-point breakout season in 2021-22 fueled by a career-high 23:22 average time-on-ice. He was one of 13 defensemen last season to pass 200 shots (203) finishing ninth in plus/minus (+40) across the entire NHL.

The Panthers placed MacKenzie Weegar on the COVID-19 protocol list on Sunday.

The Panthers placed four new players in COVID-19 protocol on Sunday, the same day that they activated eight players from the list. With Weegar likely out until the middle of next week, Gustav Forsling skated on a pairing with Aaron Ekblad in Monday's practice.

Weegar will not play Saturday due to an upper-body injury.

Weegar was on the ice for Friday's practice but missed Saturday's morning skate and head coach Joel Quenneville called him "day-to-day." This is a tough break for the Panthers, who were already without Aaron Ekblad for the weekend.

Weegar (face) is expected to miss one more week.

Weegar has missed the last three games and head coach Joel Quenneville expects him to miss at least one more week (four games). They do expect him to return to practice sometime throughout the week, which leaves the door open for the defenseman to play next week.
