After five games, it's clear that Joel Quenneville isn't happy with the Blackhawks' second line center situation. Brandon Pirri, the preseason favorite for the second line center job, has been recalled, while struggling winger Jimmy Hayes has been sent to Rockford.
Pirri, who missed most of the preseason with an injury, was one of the last roster cuts the team made heading in to October 1st's opening game. Had he not gotten injured, it's safe to assume he would have made the team from the start. This is the chance of a lifetime for Pirri, who led the entire American Hockey League in scoring last season. If he can stick, he could be up permanently. To do that, he'll have to play responsible hockey on both ends of the ice.

With Ben Smith and Dave Bolland questionable for this weekend's games, the Blackhawks re-called Pirri. Last season, the Toronto native scored 12 goals and 43 points over 70 games for the Rockland IceHogs of the AHL. He should be capable of handling a checking role for the Blackhawks, possibly potting a few goals,.
I definitely think he’ll be up here at some point. The numbers just didn’t work in his favor right now but it’s a long season, and he’s a center which puts him on high alert at all times.
The former second round pick has put himself in good position to make the team as the third line center with yet another impressive game. Last season, the Toronto native scored 12 goals and 43 points over 70 games for the Rockland IceHogs of the AHL. Forwards Jimmy Hayes, Marcus Kruger, Peter LeBlanc and Brandon Pirri and defenseman Dylan Olsen are headed to Rockford. That leaves 16 forwards, eight defensemen, and three goaltenders on the Hawks' roster.
