Defenseman

The Penguins have recalled Taylor Chorney from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL).

The Penguins have played the last two games with just five defensemen because of cap issues, but they were finally able to recall Chorney, who will be in the lineup over the weekend. The 27-year-old has 19 points (4G / 15A) in 62 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season. He has appeared in two games with the Penguins earlier in the season.

Chorney, the possible No. 7 defenceman, couldn’t play the last two periods against the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul, Minn., on Friday. Team brass maintain he only tweaked the knee, but he needs two good legs to face Malkin and Co.

Chorney's injury directly affects the team's defensive core. Last season he scored a goal and four points through 13 games with the team. Additionally, he was ranked the fastest skater on a team that featured Taylor Hall and Andrew Cogliano. If healthy he could possibly make an impact at the NHL level.
