Ray Whitney Lands in Phoenix not Carolina

Ray Whitney won a cup in Carolina and wanted to stay at the trade deadline but unfortunately could not earn another contract with his team.

I hear good things about Phoenix, he should enjoy the weather…

As one of the best free agent wingers, Whitney signed a two-year contract worth a solid six million dollars giving him a three million cap hit. A model of consistency throughout his career, the 38-year-old left wing posted at least 20 goals and 30 assists over his final four years with the Hurricanes.

At this point, Phoenix will need some talented centers to surround them as they figure to lose both Matthew Lombardi and Robert Lang to free agency. In the past, Whitney has shown success regardless of his linemates so a 20/30/50 season would certainly not be without question for at least his first season.

Due to his age, the Coyotes will be on the hook for his salary regardless of retirement or if he no longer can play at a higher level. Judging by the Patrick O’Sullivan deal, Don Maloney and the Yotes will not mind.
