Savard on the cusp of returning; fantasy value?

Marc Savard is listed as doubtful for tonight’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers but he has come a very long way.  The decision to move puck-moving defenseman Matt Hunwick— who Claude Julien considered his strongest skating defenseman– cleared just enough cap space to activate the team’s former number one center.

So he is ALMOST healthy and cleared financially to play, but do you want him on your fantasy team?

Owned in 71 percent of Yahoo! leagues, the answer seems to be an emphatic yes.  There has been no question of where he will play upon his return as Matt Kalman of The Bruins Blog told me yesterday, via Twitter.

In his career as a Bruin, Savard has an overwhelming 295 points in 279 games which includes an admitted off-year where the playmaking pivot was limited to only 41 games due to a variety of injuries, including his now-famous concussion.

Time will tell if we will see the Savard of last year’s playoffs, who was limited to three points in seven games, or if we will see one of the craftiest playmakers in the game return at full strength. Nevertheless, this guy is high-risk, high-reward and as high reward as you can get for a pickup one-third of a season through.

See if you can grab the guy from a frustrated owner, maybe even one who drafted Savard prior to his injury actually breaking.  If you are part of the lucky 29 percent who can grab him off waivers, do so accordingly.
