Sens’ Mark Borowiecki handed one-game suspension

Ottawa Senators blueliner Mark Borowiecki has been suspended one game for elbowing Boston’s Urho Vaakanainen.

The incident occurred during the first period of Tuesday’s game at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

Borowiecki caught the 19-year-old Boston rookie with a blatant elbow. Vaakanainen dropped to the ice on the play and was forced to leave the game as a result. He was later diagnosed with a concussion.

There was no penalty on the play, but Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy was steaming in his post-game interview:

“It’s a flying elbow,” Cassidy told 98.5 Boston The Sports Hub. “Listen, I am not in the heat of the battle [but] it looked fairly deliberate. But that’s not for me to decide. It’s unfortunate for Urho, he’s concussed, but at the end of the day that will move up the food chain and someone will have to make a decision whether it’s suspendible or not.”

Borowiecki had previously been suspended once in his career. He was handed a two-game suspension in 2016 for boarding Los Angeles Kings’ forward Tyler Toffoli.

Through eight games on the Ottawa blueline this season, Borowiecki is pointless with a minus-4 rating while averaging 17:32 of ice time.
