There was a cause for panic yesterday when it was revealed that Vancouver Canucks backup goaltender Casey DeSmith would not play vs. Nashville in game 4 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

It was Latvian netminder Arturs Silovs who got the call to man the crease and helped guide the Canucks to a monster victory to give them a 3-1 series lead over the Predators.

Today on Daily Faceoff Live, former NHLers Colby Cohen and Carter Hutton shine a light on Silovs and how he came up big for Vancouver when they needed it most.

Colby Cohen: Let’s start with that Vancouver and Nashville series and it’s 3-1 for Vancouver but that is not the story right now, the story is all about the goaltending. Look how lopsided those shots were, we have seen a number of different goalies in this series. What is happening in Vancouver and how do the Canucks feel about having Silovs in the net for who knows how long?

Carter Hutton: You know honestly, this is why you need goalie depth. Silovs is young and has talent but doesn’t have a lot of experience. You look at this team with Demko and it’s a legitimate cup contender. Obviously, he gets injured and the unknown of his injury, then Casey DeSmith comes in and DeSmith who has been serviceable at times throughout his career, goes down. Now you turn to Silovs and he played well last night.

Carter Hutton: Let me tell you, playing against Nashville, I feel bad for this guy. I played three seasons with Nashville and played against them in the playoffs too. To be on the other side of it is a lot to take in and he did an admirable job yesterday and we know what happened late, they came back and won. 74 shots is the lowest through four games in the playoffs and yet they find a way to steal a game and get a big win in Nashville and now they have the chance to go back to Vancouver and close out the series.
