Pittsburgh Penguins President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas announced that the club has signed Swedish goaltender Filip Larsson to a two-year contract.

The contract runs through the 2025-26 season and carries an average annual value of $775,000 at the NHL level.

Larsson spent the 2023-24 season in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Lesksands IF where he compiled a 19-9-0 record and a 1.93 goals-against average in 28 appearances. He went 3-2-0 during the SHL Playoffs.

The 25-year-old spoke to the Leksands public relations team and provided this statement, “The season that went by was absolutely fantastic both on and off the ice with all the awesome teammates and leaders throughout the club as well as all the supporters who supported us as much at home in Tegera as at all other arenas around Sweden. Even though my family and I have only been here for one season, it has been a time in our life that will always mean a lot to all three of us. Now I have been given a great opportunity in North America, an opportunity my family and I have chosen to take. With that said, we would like to thank everyone who contributed to us enjoying our stay as much as we did in Leksand. Thank you for this time!”

Larsson was oringally selected No. 167 overall in the 2016 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He came over to North America for the 2017-18 season and played for the Tri-City Storm in the USHL, putting together an 18-10-0 record and a .941 save percentage. The next year, Larsson joined the University of Denver Pioneers in the NCAA, and was named an NCAA NCHC All-Rookie Team. However, the Stockholm products’ biggest feat likely would have come in 2021-22 when he helped guide HV71 to a promotion to the SHL from HockeyAllsvenskan.

Larsson made appearances in both the ECHL and American Hockey League (AHL) with the Red Wings’ affiliates the Grand Rapids Griffins and Toledo Walleye. While with the Griffins in the AHL, he went 2-5-0, and with Toledo, put together a 4-6-0 record.
