David Rundblad News

Brian Lee is in tonight for the Sens, which must mean that David Rundblad is sitting again.

Rundblad produced three assists through his first 11 NHL games. He should continue to rotate in and out of the lineup as the Sens develop their young defenders.

looks like David Rundblad will make his NHL debut tonight. Pairing with Phillips

Rundblad makes his NHL debut tonight, pairing with the reliable stay-at-home defender Chris Phillips. Last season he posted incredible stats -- 11 goals, 50 points over 55 games played. Keep him in the back of your mind should he get valuable offensive minutes.

Despite defensive breakdowns last night, no changes to Ottawa blue line tonight. Rundblad a healthy scratch again.

Shouldn't come as a surprise as Rundblad's defensive play drew a plethora of criticism during the preseason. Last season he posted incredible stats -- 11 goals. 50 points over 55 games played. He figures to go through plenty of growing pains learning defense in his first North American season.

A door opened for the the 20-year-old Rundblad on Monday when general manager Bryan Murray announced that Matt Carkner had had surgery on his right knee that morning and would be out indefinitely, at least four to six weeks.

With Rundblad reportedly threatening to return to Europe, the Sens were forced to keep in on the 23-man roster; the injury to Carkner now solidifies his spot with the team. With defenceman Jared Cowen just about clinching a spot on the team, the next task is to decide what to do with David Rundblad. He has the option to return to Sweden if he doesn’t make the NHL, but hasn’t made an entirely compelling case for staying.

Rundblad likely makes the team simply because he would bolt for Sweden. Last season he posted incredible stats -- 11 goals. 50 points over 55 games played. He figures to go through plenty of growing pains in his first North American season.

“In order for him to play here, he has to be able to defend, we have to be able to put him on the ice and he has to be able to defend our net, and those are the things we’re working on him with,” MacLean said. “But to his credit he’s a smart enough player and a good enough player for us to be able to teach him that stuff.”

As a young rookie, the Swedish offensive defenseman will need to play smarter in order to stick in the NHL. Rundblad scored 11 goals and 50 points with Skelleftea of the SEL last season. At this point he likely stays with the team as the Sens fear him returning to Europe.
