Derek Roy News

Roy is in, no word on the forward that sits

Roy gets back into the lineup for the first time since January 6th. With only eight goals and 24 points through 40 games, the team's top center is not living up to his contract. Rushing him back from injury won't help the situation.

Derek Roy has been removed from the PP altogether. Through seven games, the Ottawa native scored a goal and four points but was not deemed as effective as in the past. Look for him to eventually get back on a PP unit once fully healed.

Forward Derek Roy admitted on Monday that he is not quite 100%. Roy is battling a leg injury not related to the torn quad he suffered last season. He will play through his ailments.

Roy starts the season on the second line and second PP unit which is a strong indicator that he is not 100 percent. Look for him to regain full strength in his legs with more practice and eventually reclaim his role as the team's go-to center.

"The quad is not the issue any more. It's something else. I've been battling some injuries during training camp. The quad is perfect. The quad is ready to go. It's a couple of other minor injuries. I've shown up every day early and leave the rink late to try to get rid of those little things."

Derek Roy missed the second half of last season with a leg injury, and he missed most of the preseason with a shoulder ailment. As could be expected, the opening two games have been a bit of a struggle for the Sabres' center.

While the Sabres have rolled to decisive wins, Roy remained in the background. Through the team's first two games, the number one center only registered one assist. Expect him to snap out of it once he develops chemistry with new left wing Nathan Gerbe.

Derek Roy practiced fully but isn't likely to play tomorrow. "Unless he really feels almost 100 percent, it doesn't make a lot of sense to use him and put him in any way, shape or form of jeopardy to play in a regular season game," said Lindy Ruff.

Sounds like Ruff expects Roy to start the team on the top line. . Last season, Roy scored 10 goals and 35 points in as many games before missing the rest of the season. Feel free to draft him if you are in need of a solid playmaker.

Jason Pominville and Derek Roy both said they are 100 percent physically and ready to start full workouts with the team on Saturday.

Roy remains the top line center in Buffalo despite missing the final 47 games of the regular season. With more-than-enough time to recover, Roy should be back at full health on one of the better Sabres teams of the last 10 years.

""We're just working on the power, just trying to get power back in the leg, and trying to get my first quick steps in,"" Roy said. ""I think that's the hardest part, coming out of turns and fighting off opponents and whatnot so I'm going to have to work on that.""
