Sparks is in concussion protocol and will not be available on Thursday.

Sparks was originally slated to start on Thursday afternoon but will be held out as a precaution while he is evaluated under the concussion protocol. The Maple Leafs recalled Michael Hutchinson and Kasimir Kaskisuo to serve as their goalies with Hutchinson expected to make his Maple Leafs debut vs. the Wild.

Sparks spent all of last season with the Toronto Marlies (AHL), going 31-9-1 with a 1.79 GAA and .936 SV%. It was a great year for the former seventh-round pick, who beat Curtis McElhinney out for the Maple Leafs’ backup job this fall. His first go-around in the NHL didn’t go so well (3.02 GAA / .893 SV%) but he seems to have upped his game since then.

The Maple Leafs like to lean heavily on Frederik Andersen, so Sparks likely won’t see more than 20 starts this season.

Sparks, 24, served as Curtis McElhinney’s backup while Frederik Andersen was hurt, but he returns to the Marlies where he has gone 24-8-1 with a 1.78 GAA and .936 SV% this season. Sparks’ return to the AHL means that Andersen will be back in Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Sparks, 24, appeared in 17 NHL games with the Maple Leafs in 2015-16, but failed to make it past the AHL last season. Sparks went 21-9-0 with a 2.16 GAA and .922 SV% in 31 games with the Marlies and was 1-1-0 in two playoff starts.
