The Rangers have signed Jack Johnson to a one-year contract worth $1.15 million.
After the Penguins bought out the final three years of his contract on Tuesday, the Rangers brought in Johnson on a one-year deal to have him replace Marc Staal. Johnson struggled in Pittsburgh, making this signing a little curious. But at the very least it allows the Rangers' young defensemen more time to develop.
The Penguins have placed Jack Johnson on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout.
Johnson had three years left with a $3.25M cap hit but is now an unrestricted free agent hoping for one last chance. Johnson's buyout will cost the Penguins $1.17M agains the cap for the next two years, $1.92M in 2023 and $916K AAV from 2024-to-2026 (per PuckPedia). In 2020, Johnson had 11 points (3G / 8A), 183 hits and 97 blocked shots in 67 games.
Johnson is expected to be back in the Penguins lineup for Game 2.
Johnson was a healthy scratch in Game 1 with Brian Dumoulin returning from injury but Johnson will likely replace Olli Maatta, who struggled in the overtime loss, on the blueline in Game 2. Johnson appeared in all 82 regular season games this season, picking up one goal and 12 assists (13 points).

Johnson will be a healthy scratch for Game 1 against the Islanders.
Johnson (undisclosed) left Monday’s game and did not return.
Johnson was forced to leave Monday’s game vs. the Devils and did not return. Head coach Mike Sullivan did not have an update on Johnson’s status post-game but expects to have more information on Tuesday. This is poor timing because the Penguins depleted their blueline depth on Monday, trading Jamie Oleksiak to the Stars.
The Penguins have signed Jack Johnson to a five-year contract worth $16.25M ($3.25M AAV).
Johnson is a former No.3 overall pick, who has had a few bad years. Johnson is coming off of a season in which he had a -5.4 relative Corsi and was a healthy scratch during the playoffs. However, Johnson remains a high-end skater who can play a physical style of game and brings some offence as well. In Pittsburgh, he will be an upgrade on Chad Ruhwedel as a third-pairing defenseman.

#CBJ D Jack Johnson will play.
The Blue Jackets best defenceman Jack Johnson has missed the last four games with a shoulder injury but will be back in the lineup tonight. Johnson has one goal and seven assists in 18 games this season. He is a good fantasy option if you have other players to counter his minus-10.

Johnson eats up 26:13 a game on average. Columbus is now without Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov and Johnson... Arguably their three best players.
As expected, Johnson lines up in the top four alongside James Wisniewski. He has eight goals and 24 points in 61 games.
