Senators agree to terms with defenceman Jared Cowen on a four-year contract with an annual cap-hit of $3.1 million US.

Cowen underwent surgery on Nov. 17 to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, which sidelined him until his return to action on April 16. He played seven regular-season NHL games in 2012-13, scoring one goal and registering 10 penalty minutes. Cowen also played in each of Ottawa’s 10 playoff games against the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins, recording three assists and 21 penalty minutes.

Cowen skated with the team for this first time this season.

Cowen had skated on his own for the last week, but joined the team today. Bryan Murray says they suggested to Cowen to join the group, doesn't mean he's close to a return. Maybe late April but still not clear. Cowen has been on IR all season.

League sources confirmed to the Sun late Monday that defenceman Jared Cowen is gone for the season with a hip injury he suffered last month during a stint with the club’s AHL affiliate in Binghamton.

Cowen is coming off a B fantasy season for the Sens but won't be able to contribute if there is any season in 2012-13. Consider him a minor 2013-14 sleeper.

Asked if Cowen looks like an NHL player right now, MacLean said the defenceman is “real close.

Cowen should make the team but will compete with fellow rookie David Rundblad and veterans like Filip Kuba and Matt Carkner. Last season he scored 18 goals and 48 points with the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL. Expect some solid play, in the mold of Chris Phillips, opposed to the offensive upside of Rundblad.

Don't know how many 2-goal games #Sens expect out of Jared Cowen but they're handy when he's trying to make the team. #BigNight #Leafs #NHL

The former 9th overall pick remains one of the better defensive prospects in the game. His two-goal output could put him on the Sens' Opening Night roster.
