Erskine made the team but remains sidelined. He played a career high 73 games last season but failed to eclipse 100 PIM and holds close to no fantasy value outside of some PIM and possibly a decent plus/minus.

Defenseman John Erskine, who had been slow to recover from shoulder surgery, was not wearing the bright orange no-contact jersey he had been sporting all camp.

Erskine played a career high 73 games last season but failed to eclipse 100 PIM. He holds close to no fantasy value despite posting a decent plus/minus and adding PIM in the past.

Erskine, who is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, has not yet been cleared for contact in practice, and yesterday the veteran defenseman didn’t sound hopeful that he would be able to appear in a preseason game.

Erskine was scheduled to make the bottom pairing as a tough guy. After missing most of the preseason Jeff Schultz looks more fit for the role. Known mostly for his fighting, Erskine never broke 100 PIM in a season.

John Erskine knows he’ll need to fight for playing time and a regular spot in the lineup this year given the Capitals’ depth on defense, but what remains unclear is when he will be able to take full contact in practice as he continues to recover from shoulder surgery.

Despite his pugilistic playing style, Erskine never topped 100 PIM or played more than last year's 73 games. If his 11 career goals in 396 games are not enough to steer you away from him, an injured shoulder should be enough deterrence.
