NHL CapHit: $5,700,000 Puckpedia Profile

The Red Wings have acquired Marc Staal and a 2021 2nd round pick in from the Rangers in exchange for future considerations.

Staal has one-year left on his contract that carries a $5.7M cap-hit. The Rangers gave up a second-round pick to Detroit to take that deal off of their books, clearing cap-space to get RFA's like Ryan Strome, Brendan Lemieux, Tony DeAngelo and Alexandar Georgiev under contract. Staal comes into Detroit to help replace Jonathan Ericsson and Trevor Daley, who the Red Wings announced they will not be bringing back. The 33-year-old had 11 points (2G / 9A) in 52 games in 2020.

Staal will be back in the Rangers lineup on Wednesday.

Staal was a healthy scratch for the last three games but will replace Ryan Lindgren in the lineup on Wednesday. Staal, who has a career-high of just 29 points (2010-11), doesn't bring any offence to the table at this point in his career, collecting just one goal in his first nine games of the 2019-20 season.

Staal left Tuesday’s game with a hip flexor injury and did not return.

Staal departed the game early in the third period after playing 14:09 and did not return. “We’ll know more Wednesday,” head coach Alain Vigneault said post-game as he did not have an update on the veteran defenseman. It doesn’t sound like injury is overly serious, but he should be considered questionable for Thursday’s game vs. the Sabres.
