The Red Wings have acquired Marc Staal and a 2021 2nd round pick in from the Rangers in exchange for future considerations.
Staal has one-year left on his contract that carries a $5.7M cap-hit. The Rangers gave up a second-round pick to Detroit to take that deal off of their books, clearing cap-space to get RFA's like Ryan Strome, Brendan Lemieux, Tony DeAngelo and Alexandar Georgiev under contract. Staal comes into Detroit to help replace Jonathan Ericsson and Trevor Daley, who the Red Wings announced they will not be bringing back. The 33-year-old had 11 points (2G / 9A) in 52 games in 2020.
Staal (upper-body) will be a game-time decision on Monday.
Staal was a late scratch for Saturday's game, with Libor Hajek returning to the lineup from a knee injury. Staal was on the ice for Monday's morning skate but remains as a game-time decision.
Staal will come out of the lineup on Saturday.
Staal will be replaced by Libor Hajek, who will play for the first time since December 5th.

Staal was a healthy scratch for the last three games but will replace Ryan Lindgren in the lineup on Wednesday. Staal, who has a career-high of just 29 points (2010-11), doesn't bring any offence to the table at this point in his career, collecting just one goal in his first nine games of the 2019-20 season.

It is the first time in Staal's 13-year NHL career that Staal will serve as a healthy scratch. Ryan Lindgren was called up for Hartford and will dress in Staal's place.

Staal has been battling an illness as of late and will not play Saturday vs. the Devils. Head coach David Quinn said that Staal is feeling better but probably shouldn’t have played in the last two games, so he will get the night off and Kevin Shattenkirk will replace him on the blueline.
Staal (cervical strain) has been cleared by doctors for contact and is targeting next Thursday’s game in Montreal as a potential return date.

Staal departed the game early in the third period after playing 14:09 and did not return. “We’ll know more Wednesday,” head coach Alain Vigneault said post-game as he did not have an update on the veteran defenseman. It doesn’t sound like injury is overly serious, but he should be considered questionable for Thursday’s game vs. the Sabres.

Staal has been out with a concussion since January 3rd, but will be back in the lineup tonight vs. the Blue Jackets. Staal has just three goals and three assists (six points) in 40 games this season and will replace Adam Clendening in the lineup.
