Matthew Lombardi News

Down and out from this game were Matthew Lombardi and Mike Komisarek, their physical issues tersely described by Ron Wilson as “upper body injuries,” and don’t bother probing for more details.

While coach Wilson would offer no further word their participation in practice will be a good indication of their individual statuses.

Matthew Lombardi not only will see his first game action as a Maple Leaf –on Saturday night but he’ll centre sniper Phil Kessel and winger Joffrey Lupul.

Lombardi will get his first action of the preseason and will have every opportunity to prove himself fully healthy. The speedy forward posted 19 goals and 53 points during the '09 - '10 campaign but missed all-but-two games due to a concussion last season. He could very well take the reigns of the top line with Nazem Kadri and Tim Connolly hurt.

Of note, though, is Matt Lombardi, who has been cleared for full contact practice for time since camp began (he’s rehabbing from a concussion). Lombardi is a real threat to Darryl Boyce and Phillipe Dupuis for the fourth line centre job.

Sounds like the speedy Lombardi will start the season on the fourth line as he eases back into an NHL role. Last season he managed to only play two games following a concussion. He could be a very valuable contingency plan should he bounce back.

Leafs forward Matthew Lombardi has been cleared for full contact in practice, and coach Ron Wilson is cautiously hopeful that he’ll be ready for the first game of the season.

If he is healthy, he should play on the third line with Nazem Kadri and Colby Armstrong. Lombardi posted 19 goals and 53 points during the '09 - '10 campaign but missed all-but-two games due to a concussion last season.

Lombardi said he’ll know more this week, after he meets with team doctors, whether he’ll be ready for training camp.

By all accounts it sounds like Lombardi will play this season. With Tim Connolly and Mikhail Grabovski down the middle, Lombardi will be eased back into the lineup.

Leafs centre Matthew Lombardi has been declared free of concussion symptoms, but might still miss the start of training camp, says GM Brian Burke.

For those of you considering drafting Lombardi: wait and see how he reacts during training camp before taking the risk. Lombardi posted 19 goals and 53 points during the '09 - '10 campaign but missed all-but-two games due to a concussion last season.

The deal with the Leafs sent defenseman Cody Franson and injured center Matthew Lombardi to Toronto in exchange for defenseman Brett Lebda and 22 year old Robert Slaney who played mostly in the ECHL last season. Also in play is a 2013 fourth round pick with the Preds receiving one from the Leafs if Lombardi plays in 60 games over the next two seasons and the Leafs getting the Preds' if he doesn't.
