Taylor Fedun News

The Sabres have recalled Taylor Fedun from Rochester (AHL).

Fedun, 28, has picked up two goals and 10 assists (12 points) in 14 games with Rochester. With Casey Nelson going down to Rochester, Fedun comes up and is expected to make his Sabres debut on Thursday. He has seven points (2G / 5A) in 12 career NHL games.

“Taylor had surgery late Friday night and he’ll be staying in the hospital for a bit in Minneapolis to recover and make sure everything goes well,” said Oilers head coach Tom Renney. “I think he’s doing fine, but as you can imagine it’s pretty traumatic.”

Fedun shattered his femur -- the largest bone in the leg, which generally stabilizes. His career could be in jeopardy at this point in time.

The Edmonton native, who was making a big push for a roster spot after graduating with a mechanical engineering degree from Princeton University, was taken from the ice on a stretcher 90 seconds into the middle period with a broken right femur.

Fedun was in line for a roster spot but will now be out for the longterm. The Princeton University graduate has yet to play an officially professional game.

If he doesn’t make the Oilers’ roster — he’s in the running with Corey Potter and Taylor Chorney for the No. 7 spot — he’s only a phone call away with the American Hockey League team in Oklahoma City.

Sounds like Fedun is close to making the team. Signed after four successful seasons at Princeton University, the 23-year-old received very little press as a prospect. He should need at least a season at the AHL level.
