Alex Ovechkin and Capitals eliminate Blue Jackets in Game 6

There won’t be a Game 7 in Columbus.

The Blue Jackets were eliminated from the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs following a 6-3 loss to the Washington Capitals in Game 6 on Monday.

Capitals’ captain Alex Ovechkin had another dominating performance, scoring a pair of goals to lead the way for Washington. Ovechkin concluded the series with five goals and eight points in six games.

Goaltender Braden Holtby is currently sporting a .936 save percentage in the playoffs after sitting the first two games against Columbus in favor of backup Philipp Grubauer.

The Capitals won four straight games to win the series after dropping the first two. Washington will face the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round 2.

The Capitals and Penguins are meeting in the postseason for the third straight season. The Penguins won both second-round series in 2015-16 and 2016-17, eliminating them each year on their way to back-to-back Stanley Cups. In total, the Penguins and Capitals have met 10 times in the postseason, with Pittsburgh taking the series in nine of those matchups.

The Penguins clinched a second-round berth when they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 6 of their first-round series at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday.

Captain Sidney Crosby racked up a whopping 13 points (six goals) in six games against the Flyers. For the third straight season, Crosby and Ovechkin will renew their rivalry in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
