Alex Ovechkin benches Zdeno Chara

This isn’t something you see everyday.

Washington captain Alex Ovechkin had his way with Boston captain Zdeno Chara in Thursday’s game between the Capitals and Bruins.

During a first-period sequence at TD Garden, Ovechkin used some inhuman strength to dump the 6′ 9″, 250 lbs Boston blueliner into the Washington bench.

Here’s the video:

You almost never see Chara get tossed around like that. Out of all the players who would be capable of doing it, though, you’d have to think Ovechkin is near the top of the list.  The Russian forward is listed at 6’3″ 235 lbs and is never afraid to lay out the body.

The hit was a sign of what was to come from Ovechkin, who later scored in the second period with a sweet release for his 31st goal of the season.

Ovechkin is a goal-scoring machine, but his hit on the 41-year-old Chara is a solid reminder of his physical strength and hitting capability.
